Forage Sorghum

  • Sorghum x Sudan hybrid
  • Medium – quick in maturity, flowering in approximately 75 days
  • Extremely fast to first grazing
  • Exhibits very rapid regrowth after grazing or cutting
  • Emerges well and grows quickly even under cool conditions
  • High tillering and superior leaf to stem ratio
  • Produces large quantities of highly digestible dry matter
  • Well suited to grazing or fodder conservation
  • Fine stems for quality hay or silage with good palatability and digestibility when grazed
  • Prussic acid levels are low but caution should be used when Stargrazer is in early growth or in a stressed condition

Stargrazer can provide high early yield of quality forage and is ideal for grazing and cutting. Stargrazer is suited to all areas and climates subject to reasonable agronomic conditions and practices. With good management and sufficient moisture, Stargrazer will provide excellent regrowth and multiple cuttings or grazings throughout the season.

Stargrazer is capable of producing 20-30 mt/ha of high quality dry matter. It is highly suited to both grazing and cutting and is normally grazed when plant height is 80 to 100 cm and baled when 100 to 150cm high. It is suited to all areas and climates subject to reasonable agronomic conditions and practices. Stargrazer is a preferred option for early grazing, haymaking and round bale silage.

    Disease Resistance/Tolerance:

Stargrazer forage sorghum does not require any varietal specific disease management considerations. However when considering broader disease management requirements, please consult extension agronomists from various state government departments or experienced commercial agronomists / consultants in the relevant growing areas.

    Pest Resistance:

Regularly monitor Stargrazer for chewing insects and sucking pests like aphids, particularly early in its life.

    Variety Management/Agronomy:

Sow forage sorghum into either a well prepared, fine, weed free seed bed, or via a no till system ensuring good seed/soil contact. Seed should be sown no deeper than 5cm. The use of a press wheel or roller is recommended to improve seed soil contact and establishment.

If grass weeds are likely to be present, consider the use of S-metolachlor herbicide (Dual Gold®) for improved weed control. Seed must be treated with Concep II® Seed Safener prior to planting to prevent seedling damage. If broadleaf weeds are a concern, consider such chemistry as atrazine or fluroxypyr (Starane™). When contemplating herbicide options, remember to factor in plant back periods applicable to following crops and pastures.
