Heritage Seeds Alfalfas: Bred for Australia's hard conditions - Grown around the world
Heritage Seeds in partnership with the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), have established one of the world's foremost alfalfa breeding programs. Current research and alfalfa breeding is for identifying key traits specific for alfalfa growing regions throughout the Middle East, the African continent, China, South and North America. Widespread adaptation to varying climates and soil types, pathogen resistance, ease of establishment, early vigor, forage quality, persistence and yield are some of the traits that Heritage Seeds alfalfa's are bred for.
Alfalfa's with large taproots capable of exploiting deep soil moisture and nutrient reserves are selected from germplasm sourced from Egypt, Morocco, India and Saudi Arabia. Potential parent lines are chosen for their ability to access the watertable as well as surviving long periods of summer drought and temporary waterlogging.
Sceptre lucerne is now widely grown in the heat of the Saudi Arabian desert under centre pivot irrigation. Large areas are also grown in Argentina, having outperformed local and U.S varieties in state-run trials, a testament to the stringent selection and breeding criteria established by Heritage Seeds in Australia.
